The Great Northern Railway brought travelers to Glacier, and Whitefish grew up along its line. Its history is tied to the park in more ways than one.

A Depot Built in the Glacier Park Style

The Great Northern Railway built the Whitefish Depot in 1927 for $65,000, in the same chalet style as its Glacier National Park buildings. The Society bought the Depot in 1990 and restored it to its original look. The Empire Builder still stops here today.

Skiing in Glacier

In 1939 the Belton Ski Club and the Glacier National Park Ski Club hosted a state ski tournament at the top of Logan Pass. The West Glacier Ski Hill opened at Stevens Meadow on January 26, 1957, and ran into an unexpected problem: a herd of elk that called the hill home. Read Top 10 Flathead Ski Hills

Marion Lacy on the Peaks

Whitefish photographer Marion Lacy shot the photos that made the town a destination, and he climbed Glacier's peaks himself. His family believes one of our photos shows him on St. Nick Peak on his 50th birthday. Read Lights, Camera, Lacy!

The Goats of Winter Carnival

The Winter Carnival's goat mascot was inspired by the mountain goats on the cliffs near Glacier Park. Read Winter Carnival: Return of the Goats

See It at the Depot
